Back In The Swing

At this point, we are about two weeks into our second semester, and it has been a struggle. On my first day back, I had very simple goals: get through my classes and turn in my paperwork to begin working at Vancrest of Ada, a nursing home less than a mile from campus. I did, in fact, get through my classes, but I couldn't turn my paperwork in as, prior to leaving, I realized I had no idea where it was. I swore that I had put it in my backpack, but it wasn't there. My roommate and I searched the whole dorm and my car, and it was nowhere to be found. This might not seem like too big of an issue, but to work in a nursing home, there's a long list of requirements to check off. I needed a background check done, my fingerprints done, and a physical done at a location that is partnered with Vancrest. I had all of it done, and everything was signed, and then I lost it.

The following day, I went to Vancrest to get a new packet of paperwork, and just my luck, the lady who handles all of the paperwork had just left. Luckily, when I finally got new paperwork, I was told that I only needed to get my fingerprints done again, as everything else had been sent to them. I was so happy about that that I didn't even mind the drive to the sheriff's office in Kenton and back. I got them done this week and will finally be starting my job soon.

I was hoping that that would be where the struggle ended, but it was not. This Monday evening, both my head and my stomach started hurting. I didn't think anything about my stomach because I'm gluten intolerant, and I had just eaten gluten. The headache wasn't normal, but I hadn't drunk a lot of water that day, so I chalked it up to slight dehydration. I took some Ibuprofen and felt fine the rest of the night, so I forgot about it and went to bed. I proceeded to wake up the next morning with the same headache and stomach ache that I had felt the night prior, except now my throat was scratchy, and I could only breathe through one nostril. My symptoms got progressively worse throughout the day, and I ended up developing a fever that night. To make matters worse, I had to postpone my University Singers audition today as I woke up, and my throat and sinuses were worse. Now, I have to pray that I wake up tomorrow and feel better because I could only get my audition pushed back to tomorrow before noon. As much as I want to believe that that will happen, it probably won't, so I'm preparing to audition sick tomorrow.

Stay tuned because this isn't far off from my everyday life!

  1. Hey Reese,
I totally get how you are feeling, coming back to school after having a nice long break is difficult and I always lose my things the first week back. Also I didn't know you were auditioning for University Singers, that's awesome! I'm personally not in the choir but I know a lot of people who are and they love it! I hope your audition went well and it sucks that you were sick the day before. I have totally been there. During my audition season for musical theatre, I was sick a couple times and trying to sing while being congested is the worst. I hope that you are feeling better and I can't wait to hear more about your job!

  2. This week has definitely been a trying a time, but that doesn't sound fun at all. The first day of classes I lost my phone in my dorm, so I feel you on misplacing things. Good luck on your University Singers auditions! It always seems like I'm sick right before an important audition or performance. Last year I ended up with a sinus infection during our performances for Cinderella and it was horrible. I was backstage laying on the floor or trying to clear my sinuses desperately between everything. I hope you feel better!
