Finally Getting My Job

I kicked off yesterday at 9:00 am when I had to get up for my work orientation at Vancrest. I would usually be waking up for my Intro to Theater class at this time, but today was different.

My orientation started at 9:30 am, and we hit the ground running. From the moment I walked in, I was learning all about Vancrest. I learned about their rules and regulations, their drills, their staff, and even the history of Vancrest. While learning all of this, I was required to answer a packet of fill-in-the-blank and multiple-choice questions. Following that was a quick icebreaker between Jen, who was the HR lady running the orientation, another woman who was there for a nursing position, and myself. We really just answered a list of questions, and I honestly learned a lot about the two of them. After that was our tour of the nursing home. It is honestly a lot bigger than it looks on the outside. I tried to pay attention and remember as much as possible, but I think if I were to go back right now, I would get lost within five minutes. When we concluded the tour, the lady who was there for the nursing position broke off and finished her orientation with another employee while I stayed with Jen. I then followed Jen back to her office, where I had to sign, date, and initial more papers than I'd ever had to in one sitting. I was sitting there signing these papers when it hit me. I HAD TO PEE! I asked to be excused, found the bathroom, and quite literally, just made it in time. This doesn't seem like an important piece of information right now, but it's about to. I returned to Jen's office and finished signing the papers, to which she told me that I would have to get a tuberculosis skin test and take a drug test. Now, we had discussed my getting the tuberculosis test during orientation, but I was not prepared for her to say drug test. Don't get me wrong, I had no issue with the drug test itself, but I had just peed, so I did not need to pee again for a while. I understand that it was probably supposed to be a surprise test, but it would have been nice to at least know before I emptied the tank. I got the skin test, and I'm sure you can guess what came next. I had to chug a water bottle to get just enough out for them to test it. Then, to top it all off, as I was getting ready to leave Vancrest, an elderly lady stopped me and asked, "Are you a boy or a girl?" Ouch. I responded, "I'm a boy, ha ha," and left.
Today's fun fact: if you want your confidence to be shot, just visit a nursing home.

  1. Hello Reese, it sounds like you had quite the eventful day at your work orientation. It’s interesting how quickly things can take a turn, from learning about Vancrest to having to take surprise drug test. It’s great that you handled it all with a sense of humor. I can definitely see how a comment like that from the elderly lady would throw you off a bit, but you handled it well(Better than I would have). Hopefully, your future visits to the nursing home are a little less eventful, but it’s nice to know you’re taking it all in stride.
