Finally Adulting
I wish I could say that I have some crazy and fun weekend to write about, but unfortunately, I do not. I've mentioned in a couple previous blogs that I work at a nursing home just off of campus called Vancrest.
I honestly love it there. I love the residents, I love the staff and the pay is good. As much as I like working, when I'm working almost 30 hours a week, it gets a bit difficult to stay on top of schoolwork. Last week I worked Monday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. This week, I worked Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday and I work Friday. I'm not sure if you noticed, but that is seven days in a row, which is not ideal when I am a full-time college student, too. As I said, this has put me behind in all of my classes due to a lack of time and burnout.
In an attempt to combat this, though, my roommate and I are making a new schedule where on the days that I don't have work, we come back to the dorm after classes and get to be on our phones for a half hour, then get a half hour power nap then get to work. Instead of working in the dorm, though, we decided to work in a different building as we feel less productive when sitting in our dorm. Today, we worked on the balcony of Mathile, and just being outside in the fresh air and sunlight made me so much more productive and willing to do work. I got a lot of work done today, but it only made a dent in what I need to get done. Having a schedule has also made me feel productive, which in turn allows me to be able to sit down and get work done. It's crazy to me that by just making a list and a plan to complete the things on the list, the amount of motivation I gained.
This got me thinking that if it works for school work, then it probably works for getting anything done throughout the day, including things like working out. This is something that I've been wanting to be better about four years now. In the years past, I would start going to the gym every night after I got some homework done, but when the time I needed for homework was higher than usual, or if something came up that interfered with that time, I would just not go instead of planning around it. In my experience, once you have an unplanned missed day early on in your regiment, you start spiraling. Then I would push going to the gym off until I just wasn't going to the gym anymore. This repeated for four years with no change, and I kind of wrote it off because I played on a soccer team year-round, so I was still getting exercise but not building a lot of muscle like I wanted. I truly believe that if I make an actual schedule with time dedicated to each thing I need to get done, I will see a huge difference in productivity, and I think I will feel better, too. Now that my roommate and I are holding each other accountable for our schedules, I am confident that I will quickly see a difference.
I'm glad that you have been able to find a schedule that works for you! It can be very difficult, especially if each day looks different but sticking to a schedule isn't easy work. I hope that this continues to work for you both!
