Reese's Rankings
Chapter three was all about marketing strategy and social media advertising, but I want to focus on the marketing strategy. I am going to rank the 10 steps in creating a social media marketing strategy from what I think is the most important to what I think is the least important.
1. Step 1: Identify a target market and create personas
Understanding your target audience is the most important step. If you don't know your audience, their pain points, and what their interests are, the rest of the strategy is pointless. Buyer personas help you create your content, set your tone, and decide what platforms to use.
2. Step 3: Establish goals, objectives, and metrics
Clear goals ensure that what you're putting on social media lines up with your business objectives. They give direction for the things you want to achieve, like brand awareness and engagement. They also provide measurable metrics to track success.
3. Step 4: Determine resources, roles, and responsibilities
Figuring out who is responsible for what helps to execute your social media strategy effectively. It's important to find resources to make sure your plan can actually be carried out and maintained.
4. Step 6: Select a platform
Selecting the right platform ensures that you find and connect with your audience where they spend their time. This impacts things like content creation and targeting. If you're on the wrong platform, your efforts can fall flat.
5. Step 5: Establish a tone of voice
Your tone of voice helps determine your brand's personality on social media. It's important to be consistent and ensure that you're resonating with your target audience. Over time, this will build a trusted brand presence.
6. Step 8: Create and optimize social media content strategy
Content is what social media is all about. Creating a strategy that aligns with your goals and audience is essential. It should interpret what types of content will resonate with the majority of your audience, whether it be images, blogs, videos, et cetera. This will ultimately drive engagement and conversations.
7. Step 7: Create and optimize social media networks
Optimizing your profiles is vital for presenting a professional image. This includes anything from pictures and bios to your website links and other assets. Improving this will boost discoverability and engagement potential.
8. Step 9: Create a social media content calendar and schedule posts
A content calendar makes content creation much easier and ensures consistency. It also allows you to plan ahead for special events such as holidays, campaigns, and product launches. Although scheduling is important, it comes after creating a strong strategy and optimizing your profiles.
9. Step 2: Conduct a social media audit
Social media audits are good for understanding your current performance, identifying errors, and learning from past mistakes. This being said, it's a task done to improve from your previous social media presence. The audit should inform your strategy, but understanding your audience and setting clear goals are much more foundational.
10. Step 10: Track, analyze, and tune
Tracking and analyzing your performance is crucial for long-term success. It allows you to adjust your tactics and overall improve over time. However, this comes after your strategy is in place and content is being distributed. Obviously, improving over time is very important, but again, it's not as foundational as defining your goals and audience.
In summary, steps one and three are at the top as they are the basis of your strategy. Once you understand your audience and set your goals, you can effectively plan, create content, choose platforms, and measure your progress. The last steps, audit, content scheduling, and performance tracking, help you improve your efforts moving forward.
