Scrolling Through Time: The Rise of Social Media

It’s hard to imagine life without social media. From scanning Instagram over lunch to swiping through TikToks before bed, social media is life. But things weren't always that way. Social media has progressed from simple status updates to a complex and powerful tool that drives the way we communicate, exchange information and do business.

Social media started early in the 2000s with websites like MySpace and Friendster. These initial websites allowed users to create profiles, upload photos and connect friends. Facebook came along in 2004 and was an instant global platform from its humble beginnings as a college networking site. Twitter came along in 2006, offering another channel for communicating short ideas and information. Time, though, brought new uses in the shape of Instagram in 2010 and TikTok in 2016, each with its own revolutionary means of influencing people's uses and attitudes toward social media.

What’s amazing is how much these sites have developed. Social media originally was all about staying in touch with friends and telling others what’s going on in one’s life. Now, it’s an amazing communications tool that’s being used by people, businesses and even governments. Social media is no longer all games and nonsense — it’s a massive part of our society, economy and culture.

One of the most dramatic changes is how social media is being used for business and marketing. Companies use social media sites like Instagram, Facebook and LinkedIn to promote their target audience, their products and brand themselves. Content creators and influencers also help massively promote today. With just a phone and tons of followers, one can build careers producing stuff that makes people feel things.

Social media has also been employed as a catalyst for social change and activism. The use of hashtags like #BlackLivesMatter and #MeToo has triggered important debates and opened up discussion on key issues. These movements are evidence of the potential of social media to bring about awareness and mobilize societies.

One of the ways through which social media outperforms now is through algorithms and personalization. Social media uses artificial intelligence and information about users in order to display us content with which we are interested. This brings in interaction through the user, yet at the same time, brings up issues with regard to privacy and spreading false information. Through social media expansion, it’s become important to critically view what we see from the world through social media.

Social media, of course, is not flawless. It also has some negatives, including cyberbullying, addiction and the pressure to build a flawless online existence. Nevertheless, even with its negatives, social media has revolutionized the way individuals communicate, learn and express themselves.

The most incredible thing is how quickly it has occurred. Social networking has been evolved from a specialist hobby to a global phenomenon in a period of less than 20 years. It now impacts what we discuss, shapes our views and assists us in determining who we are — both offline and on the web.

As a college freshman, I’ve grown up with social media all around me. I’ve seen how it keeps people connected, how it spreads information fast and how it gives anyone a voice. It’s exciting to think about where social media will go next, especially as new technologies like virtual reality and artificial intelligence continue to develop.

In the end, social media is more than just a trend — it’s a reflection of our society and a key part of modern life. Whether we’re scrolling, posting or just watching, we’re all part of this constantly evolving digital world.
